The station was opened on 6 December 1869, when the Midland Railway opened its Weston, Castle Donington and Trent branch. [ 1 ] It was closed to passengers on 21 September 1930 [ 2 ] then closed to freight in 1959.
It has rail access from the Castle Donington line, road access from junction 24 of the M1 motorway, and lies immediately to the north of East Midlands Airport. It thus unites air, road, and rail freight in a central location. [1] [2] [3] [4]

Castle Donington has three primary schools, St Edwards, Foxbridge, and Orchard, the latter serving the majority of the children of the town. Castle Donington College, which welcomed KS4 for the first time in 2017, takes students from ages 11–16 and is the village's only secondary school.
