The Perak State Emergency Preparedness and Response Centre began operations in April 2009, following the onset of the Influenza A (H1N1) pandemic.The centre is activated in accordance with the intention of the Ministry of Health Malaysia to coordinate health activities related to preparedness, prompt action and recovery before, during and after an outbreak of illness, disaster and crisis.
A recent use of the Emergency Ordinance was in June 2011, to detain indefinitely 6 members of Parti Sosialis Malaysia, including Sungai Siput Member of Parliament Dr. Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj, due to their support for the Bersih 2.0 rally for electoral reform. These 6 people have been collectively called the Emergency Ordinance 6, or EO6.

The Special Malaysian Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (SMART; Malay: Pasukan Mencari dan Menyelamat Khas Malaysia, Jawi: ڤاسوكن منچاري دان مڽلامت خاص مليسيا) is a disaster relief and rescue task force established under the National Security Council based on the approval of the Cabinet on 18 May 1994.
