In 1999, full-day programs were added for the 9th and 10th grade, with the 11th grade following in 2000, and the 12th grade in 2001. The school building was renovated to include three new full science labs, an atrium, gymnasium, and a new performing arts center that opened at the beginning of the 2010-2011 school year.
The school is tuition-free and open to all Michigan students, grades 6-12, with an interest in the arts. Any secondary school student who qualifies as a resident of the State of Michigan is eligible to attend. The academy opened in August 2001, initially only to students entering the 9th grade.
This year, there were 750 high schools across Michigan fielding a football program. Of those, 136 have won a football state championship among what is now 10 classes (eight 11-man and two 10-man).
In 1965 enrollment hit 4959 and the D wing was added to the Junior-Senior High School. On January 22, 1967 the auditorium was opened. In 2002 the new Auto Technology and Pre-engineering Center opened. A new Media Center and Communication and performing Arts Center opened at Fitzgerald High School in 2003.
