A.L. Gebhardt & Co. was a leather tanning company founded in 1895. It operated in Milwaukee , Wisconsin and Berlin , Germany [ 1 ] It produced leather for shoes, handbags and belts. It was owned by U.S. Leather in the late 1980s. [ 2 ]
On September 5, 1950, Douglas Seaman purchased Western Welding & Manufacturing, a small machine shop in Milwaukee that was founded in 1943. Western mainly handled small, one-off welding jobs for large manufacturers. A friend suggested to Seaman that he should start manufacturing snowplows as a way to diversify his business, which he did.

Wisconsin Leather's tannery at Two Rivers closed in 1887, due to the dwindling supply of tanbark there, and in the same year the company failed financially. By 1888 the company had relocated its offices and production had shrunk to $250,000, with 100 employees. In 1889 the remains of Wisconsin Leather were bought by competitor Pfister and Vogel.
The company's first catalog was a 16-pages, two-color production selling canine medications. As the company grew, toys, pet furniture, and other products were added. The Milwaukee, Lake Shore and Western Railway or Lake Shore Road (reporting mark MLS&W) is a former railroad company whose mainline connected Milwaukee, the Upper Peninsula and northwest Wisconsin [1] with connection to Chicago by way of the Chicago & North Western Railway. [2] It was acquired by the C&NW August 19, 1893. [3]
