SecuriLock, also known as Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS), is an immobilizer technology that Ford began using select Ford as well as Lincoln, and Mercury models. Each key have a radio frequency transponder embedded in the plastic head with a unique electronic identification code.
Transponder keys may also be called "chip keys". Transponder keys are automotive ignition keys with signal-emitting circuits built inside. When the key is turned in the ignition cylinder, the car's computer transmits a radio signal to the transponder circuit. The circuit has no battery; it is energized by the radio signal itself.
This chip was never sold commercially, but a close variation, the 8096, was extremely popular. The major difference between these two chips was the external instruction/data bus. Ford wanted to minimize the number of pins used for input and output so Intel designed a unique bus (MBUS) that multiplexed address and data onto an 8 bit bus.
The electric immobiliser/alarm system was invented by St. George Evans and Edward Birkenbeuel and patented in 1919. [2] They developed a 3x3 grid of double-contact switches on a panel mounted inside the car so when the ignition switch was activated, current from the battery (or magneto) went to the spark plugs allowing the engine to start, or immobilizing the vehicle and sounding the horn.
