Lahontan cutthroat trout, the largest cutthroat trout subspecies in the world, travel nearly 17 miles each year to spawn in the tributary creeks feeding northwestern Nevada’s Summit Lake. The federally protected fish will now be able to make their journey much easier this spring.
The Lahontan cutthroat trout is one of 13 living sub-species of cutthroat trout. This ?sh is native to the Lahontan Basin of northern Nevada, northeastern California and southeastern Oregon. This subspecies exhibits three life histories including: stream-type, migratory and lacustrine forms.
Our office is integral in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's efforts to protect and restore threatened Lahontan cutthroat trout populations in the Lake Tahoe, Truckee, Pyramid and Walker Lake Basins and endangered Cui-ui in Pyramid Lake, in close partnership with tribes and other key partners.
