For example, handling (under sail, in reverse, docking, etc.) is surprisingly easier on our Legend 37.5 than the old Catalina 30TR. I still think the C30TR wasn't hard to sail; yes the rudder was too small and the 150 easily overpowered the boat, but it wasn't hard to sail with a bit of understanding.
Don't be fooled by the distance; it may be only 500 miles or so, but it could easily take a couple of weeks. Many years ago I helped a friend sail and old Ericson 35-2, with very tired sails and an Atomic 4 that was really an Atomic 2-and-a-half, from LA to SF. We got to Port San Luis in a week. But it then took three tries to get from PSL to SF.
I want to sail into the sunset and hopefully I will, but I have seen some pretty compelling arguments made for motors and motor sailers. Older trawlers can be had for far less $$ than sailboats. That savngs is enough to buy a lot of fuel and some of them use a lot less than I thought. Trawlers often have better passenger accomodations.
I had a Sabre 34 with a sail pack and the battens would catch on the lazy jacks. The system worked in light air but in 15 knots or more and a little bit of set from the current the sail would get hung up... I would either hoist on the mooring and sail off or raise out in the harbor and fight the lazy jacks.
The sail will drop as you drag the bottom of the roll aft between the mast and the shrouds. With that you'll end up with the rolled sail on deck. You can then release the halyard, add a few ties along the length of the sail and accordion fold the sail over on itself starting at the bottom and bag the thing.
I bought my Moody 376 in 2020. It had beenon the hard for 3000+ days. One of the things that was in ok shape and passable was the canvas. Thankfully the canvas and sails had been stored properly at the Po's home. UV cover on the Geona needed a few stiches, the main sail cover, winch...
Sail rite means nothing to anybody in the sewing business- Singer- juki- brother ok that''s a machine The sewing industry in the US collapsed. It''s gone. All the machines we sew on are manual machines. They''re obsolete. So is sewing. Sewing is now an unskilled trade done by anybody on automated machines. Interesting point.
With a smaller sized ring you might be about 5-10mm lower than using the cringle itself. However you wouldn't crush the sail with the reefing line. The clew reef should be pulled pretty far back to flatten the sail so a lot of that 5-10mm would be horizontal, not vertical. The Goiot insert mentioned earlier would let you get even lower.
for a sail design....I have done my own sail painting for a friend and I liked the results. The hard part was finding a place for the sail. The image I painted was of a cool cat. This was a one color image (black). This was about 7 years ago and my friend is still happy with it. I used speedball fabic paint and airbrushed most of it.
