The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America is one of the largest mutual life insurance companies in the world. Based in Manhattan, it has approximately 8,000 employees in the United States, and a network of over 3,000 financial representatives in more than 70 agencies nationwide.
Guardian Holdings Limited started in 1847 when Standard Life of Edinburgh, Scotland entered the market and started a branch office in Trinidad. [1] Over time, Standard Life of Edinburgh closed operations and merged its Trinidad and Tobago portfolio with the portfolio of Jamaica Mutual Life Assurance Society on the 15th November, 1972.
The first United States agency was opened in New York in 1869 but in 1894 the Guardian withdrew from that market. Acquisitions featured, and between 1890 and 1892 the Guardian bought three businesses in South Africa, one in France and one in Canada. National Guardian Life Insurance Company (NGL) was founded in 1909 under the name The Wisconsin State Life Insurance Company as a stock company in Madison, Wisconsin. In August 1910 the company changed their name to Guardian Life Insurance Company and a month later the first life insurance policy - policy #1 with a face amount of $5,000 - was sold.
The company was established through the merger of the Guardian Assurance Company and Royal Exchange Assurance in 1968. [1] In February 1998 it acquired PPP Healthcare, a private healthcare insurer, for £435m. [2] In February 1999 it was acquired by Axa of France for $5.7bn and integrated into its Sun Life & Provincial Holdings division. [3]
She was also in charge of leading Guardian's Berkshire Life Insurance Company during that time. [4] Mulligan was CEO of Guardian Life from July 2011 until October 2020. [5] She was made director of Guardian in 2013. [2] In 2012, she was awarded the Israel Bonds Neil Levin Memorial Award for "professional accomplishments in support of Israel."

Joseph Dudley Sargent (April 16, 1937 – November 1, 2016) was the former president, chief executive officer, and chairman of the board of The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America. [1] Sargent was born in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, the son of Gerald Thomas Sargent from Bar Harbor, Maine, and Honora Oliver from County Mayo, Ireland.
