Carentan (French pronunciation: [kaʁɑ̃tɑ̃]) is a small rural town near the north-eastern base of the French Cotentin Peninsula in Normandy in north-western France, with a population of about 6,000. It is a former commune in the Manche department. On 1 January 2016, it was merged into the new commune of Carentan-les-Marais. [2]

From 21 December 1988 to 30 June 1994, the Train touristique du Cotentin ran trains on a 10 km (6.2 mi) section of track from Carentan to Baupte with a 1950s railcar, then the X3825 , the X2426 .

The canton of Carentan-les-Marais (before March 2020: canton of Carentan) [3] is an administrative division of the Manche department. Its borders were modified at the French canton reorganisation which came into effect in March 2015.
