Eyeglasses which filter out the very specific wavelengths allow the wearer to see a full color 3D image. Special interference filters (dichromatic filters) in the glasses and in the projector form the main item of technology and have given the system this name. It is also known as spectral comb filtering or wavelength multiplex visualization.

This image has partial transparency (254 possible levels of transparency between fully transparent and fully opaque). It can be transparent against any background despite being anti-aliased. Some image formats, such as PNG and TIFF, also allow partial transparency through an alpha channel, which solves the edge limitation problem.

X-Ray Specs were long advertised with the slogan "See the bones in your hand, see through clothes!" Some versions of the advertisement featured an illustration of a young man using the X-Ray Specs to examine the bones in his hand while a voluptuous woman stood in the background, as though awaiting her turn to be "X-rayed".
