Doncaster Royal Infirmary started life as the Doncaster Dispensary on French Gate (now Greyfriars Road) in 1792: the original two-storey building was erected at the cost of £665. [3] [4] This became the Doncaster General Infirmary and Dispensary in 1868 with 23 beds and the Doncaster Royal Infirmary and Dispensary in 1906. [5]
After local officials decided to build a new hospital, it moved to a new site, leased from Andrew Montagu, in 1905. Local people paid a halfpenny a week to finance the venture which initially only had 14 beds. [3] The size of the hospital grew steadily although between 1919 and 1939, the number of hospital beds increased from 48 to 120. [4]

The hospital has its origins in the Kilton Hill Infirmary, which was designed by Herbert Scalping and built by JH Vickers and which served as the local Poor Law Infirmary. [1] It was opened by the local chairman of the poor law guardians in January 1902. [ 2 ]
