Latterly the name became a top-end luxury model designation for cars from subsidiaries of British Leyland and the Rover Group, being last used in 2009 to denote the top-luxury version of the Jaguar XJ (X350).
The luxury Vanden Plas 1500 version of the Allegro debuted in 1975. By this time, its original rival, the Ford Cortina , had long since grown larger, putting ADO16 into the small, rather than medium-sized class, which British Leyland was now competing in with the Austin Maxi , Morris Marina as well as the long-running Austin 1800 saloons.
