The MTAC is an outgrowth of the Navy Anti-Terrorist Alert Center (ATAC). The ATAC was established in December 1983 to address the terrorist threat after the bombing of the Marine Corps barracks in Beirut , Lebanon , and the murders of Navy officers in Greece by the Revolutionary Organization 17 November and in El Salvador by the FMLN . The squadron relocated to Highwood, Illinois in 1995 and again in 2001 to their current location at Naval Station Great Lakes. Since the September 11, 2001 attacks elements of MTACS-48 have mobilized to support Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan .
