Genesee County (/ ˈ dʒ ɛ n ə s i / JEN-uh-see) is a county in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2020 Census , the population was 406,211, [ 1 ] making it the fifth-most populous county in Michigan, and the most populous in Mid Michigan .

The owners at the time donated it to the county at the end of the year, and the county government was formally recognized by the territory of Michigan in 1836. The county courts first met in various stores, and the first courthouse at the current site, a log structure, was constructed in 1838–1839.
