Painting in the traditional style is known today in Chinese as guó huà (simplified Chinese: 国画; traditional Chinese: 國畫), meaning "national painting" or "native painting", as opposed to Western styles of art which became popular in China in the 20th century.
At the Spring 2002 auction, which featured 2,158 items, [11] Hanhai sold a painting of two birds in a pond of lotuses by Bada Shanren for ¥5,170,000 (US$748,000). The sale of this work, formerly owned by a foreign collector, was a record price for a work of Chinese art. Another work, Mountain and Water, was sold for ¥2,300,000 (US$330,000). [12]
The earliest mention of the word chungong is found in the Chu Ci, but the word only began to mean erotic paintings from the Song dynasty. [7] [3]The first known record of the tradition of erotic art, however, dates back to 2nd century B.C. Chen ping of the Han Dynasty, and Guangchuanwang were said to have enjoyed drawing erotic art.
Five are traditional Chinese paintings by Qi Baishi, Wu Bin, Wang Meng and Xu Yang. In particular, Qi Baishi's Twelve Landscape Screens was sold for $140.8 million in 2017. Before the creation of the book, Chinese art-related works mainly focused on appreciation and cataloging, such as Gu Kaizhi's (顾恺之) On Painting and Xie He's (谢赫) Classified Record of Ancient Paintings. Zhang Yanyuan thus pioneered Chinese art history by being the first to document painters in a chronological format.
