Jefferson High School (JHS) opened in 1922 to its first 50 students using the old Jefferson Hall (previously Jefferson Elementary School) near San Pedro Road and Hill Street. Recognizing the need for a more suitable campus to accommodate the rapidly expanding student body, JUHSD residents voted to build a new campus at the current location in 1923.

The Oregonian reported in January 1922 that Jefferson was the largest high school in Portland, with 2,063 students. [10] Hopkin Jenkins was principal at Jefferson from its opening until June 1940. [8] Due to the baby boom and passing of a $25 million building levy by the school district in 1947, a new high school was slated.
A mural with a large portrait of Thomas Jefferson was commissioned by TJ Arts for the building's atrium. It was created by Dennis Stocke, a local artist and art teacher at Boyce Middle School in the Upper St. Clair School District. As of 2024, the original high school building has been demolished and in its place is more parking for the stadium.

It remained the only high school in Jefferson County until the fall of 2008. In-county rival, Washington High School, opened for the 2008–09 school year, splitting the Jefferson student body. Jefferson's total enrollment is 1,400. Jefferson's baseball program is the most decorated in West Virginia.
The Jefferson Township High School Falcons [2] compete in the Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference, a high school athletic conference comprised of schools in Morris, Sussex and Warren counties, that was created following a reorganization of sports leagues in Northern New Jersey by the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA).
