The Jaguar XJ (XJ40) is a full-size luxury saloon manufactured by Jaguar Cars between 1986 and 1994. It was officially unveiled on 8 October 1986 as an all-new, second generation of the XJ to replace the Series III, although the two model ranges were sold concurrently until the Series III was discontinued in 1992.

Jaguar made several fundamental changes to the design of the IRS for the new XJ40 model, launched in 1986. The shape of the subframe changed to an approximate triangle, bolted to the front of the differential and attached to the car at approximately the same points as the radius arms of the first generation IRS.
Styled to evoke the Jaguar SS100 and sold from 1972 to 1981, it used mechanicals from the Jaguar XJ, including its 5.3 L V12 engine. It was also offered with Jaguar's 3.8 L and 4.2 L XK engines. [2] The J.72 was a success for the small company, with its Connolly leather upholstery, and aluminum coachwork.
Jaguar and TWR attempted to continue racing on with a cheaper and smaller scale project, a racing version of the XJ220 for the GT classes, but it was short-lived. One unique XJR model was the 1990 XJR-15 , which was a limited-edition road-legal supercar built by TWR from the design of the XJR-9 and featuring Jaguar's V12.
