The Harrison family chose a site at the crest of Mt. Nebo on the family estate and the interment occurred July 7, 1841. In 1871, John Harrison sold all but 6 acres (2.4 ha) of the estate. He offered this portion, containing the tomb and other burial sites, to the state of Ohio in exchange for a pledge of perpetual maintenance.

Harrison was the home of Ohio's fifth governor Othneil Looker. It was one of the few stops in Ohio on the Whitewater Canal, built between 1836 and 1847, which spanned a distance of 76 miles (122 km). On July 13, 1863, Morgan's Raiders, a Confederate cavalry force, invaded.
Harrison was settled in the early 1800s. Most who came were veterans of the Revolutionary War who had received land grants for their service. [2] Among them was Othniel Looker who bought this property and with his two eldest sons cleared the land and erected the wood house.
