The state highway system of the U.S. state of California is a network of highways that are owned and maintained by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans).. The numbers and routes of all state roads are assigned by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), while county road numbers are assigned by the counties, with guidance from FDOT. [2] North-south routes are generally assigned odd numbers, while east-west routes are generally assigned even numbers. [3]
These routes are all part of the California Route Marker Program, which was established in 1958. This program was incorporated into the National Uniform County Route Marker Program created by the National Association of Counties in 1967.
