Tuberculosis generally affects the lungs, but it can also affect other parts of the body. [1] Most infections show no symptoms, in which case it is known as latent tuberculosis . [ 1 ] Around 10% of latent infections progress to active disease that, if left untreated, kill about half of those affected. [ 1 ]
A tuberculoma is a clinical manifestation of tuberculosis which conglomerates tubercles into a firm lump, and so can mimic cancer tumors of many types in medical imaging studies. [1] [2] They often arise within individuals in whom a primary tuberculosis infection is not well controlled. [3]
About 2% of all cases of tuberculosis are considered Pott's Disease [12] and about half (50%) of the cases of musculoskeletal tuberculosis are Pott's Disease, [6] [13] of which 98% affect the anterior column. The disease can be attributed to 1.3 million deaths per year.
Human infectious diseases may be characterized by their case fatality rate (CFR), the proportion of people diagnosed with a disease who die from it (cf. mortality rate). It should not be confused with the infection fatality rate (IFR), the estimated proportion of people infected by a disease-causing agent, including asymptomatic and undiagnosed infections, who die from the disease.
The Heaf test was used in the United Kingdom until 2005, and is graded on a four-point scale. The Mantoux test is now used. The equivalent Mantoux test positive levels done with 10 TU (0.1 ml 100 TU/ml, 1:1000) are 0–4 mm induration (Heaf 0 to 1) 5–14 mm induration (Heaf 2) Greater than 15 mm induration (Heaf 3 to 5)
Active tuberculosis can be contagious while latent tuberculosis is not, and it is therefore not possible to get TB from someone with latent tuberculosis. The main risk is that approximately 10% of these people (5% in the first two years after infection and 0.1% per year thereafter) will go on to develop active tuberculosis.
