Mount Ararat is a polygenic, compound stratovolcano. Covering an area of 1,100 km 2 (420 sq mi), it is the largest volcanic edifice within the region. Along its northwest–southeast trending long axis, Mount Ararat is about 45 kilometers (28 mi) long and is about 30 kilometers (19 mi) long along its short axis.
The Aras Mountains start from the Erzurum border, pass the Ağrı and Kars borders, and end in the west of Mount Ararat. This mountain range, extending from west to east, divides the geography it passes through into two in the north-south direction. The most important elevations of the mountains are Zor and Pamuk mountains.

The site is 3 km (1.9 miles) north of the Iranian border, 16 km (9.9 miles) southeast of Doğubayazıt in the Ağrı Province, and 29 kilometres (18 miles) south of the Greater Mount Ararat summit, at an elevation of 1,966 to 2,004 m (6,450 to 6,575 ft) above sea level.
