Suri alpacas. Alpacas make a variety of sounds: Humming: When alpacas are born, the mother and baby hum constantly. They also hum as a sign of distress, especially when they are separated from their herd. Alpacas may also hum when curious, happy, worried, or cautious. Snorting: Alpacas snort when another alpaca is invading their space.
A picture of a huacaya alpaca. A drawing of a Huacaya alpaca. The Huacaya alpaca is one of two breeds of alpaca, [3] the other breed being the Suri alpaca. [4] Both breeds were first domesticated by the Incas thousands of years ago from a wild species of camelid, the vicuña.
Alpacas come in 22 natural colors, with more than 300 shades from a true black through brown-blacks, browns, fawns, white, silver-greys, and rose-greys. There are even more colors. [ 2 ] However, white is predominant, [ 2 ] because of selective breeding : the white fiber can be dyed in the largest ranges of colors.
