The Racine Correctional Institution is a medium-security state prison for men located in Sturtevant, Racine County, Wisconsin, owned and operated by the Wisconsin Department of Corrections. [1] The facility opened in 1991 and, and of June 2023, held 1,610 prisoners. [2]
That same year, Wisconsin created the office of state prison commissioner as a state-wide partisan elected office. That office was abolished in 1874 and replaced by a board of commissioners appointed by the governor, which was folded into the state Board of Supervision of Charitable, Reformatory and Penal Institutions in 1881.

The Racine County Jail, located in downtown Racine and sharing a block with the Racine County Law Enforcement Center, is the primary detention facility of the county and the sheriff's office. The jail has a maximum capacity of 876 inmates, making it one of the largest non-state detention facilities in Wisconsin.
It is owned and operated by the Wisconsin Department of Corrections. [1] The facility opened in October 2001 and holds 1,040 inmates at medium security. The building is located along Interstate 43 one block north of the Milwaukee County Courthouse , and diagonally across the street from the Milwaukee County Jail & Criminal Justice Facility.

DCI served as the reception center for both male and female inmates until December 1, 2004, when the female reception center moved to the Taycheedah Correctional Institution. DCI also serves as the central medical center for the division, providing both in-patient and out-patient care for male and female inmates. [3]
