Gweru, originally known as Gwelo, is a city in central Zimbabwe.It is on the centre of Midlands Province.Originally an area known to the Ndebele as "The Steep Place" because of the Gweru River's high banks, in 1894 it became the site of a military outpost established by Leander Starr Jameson. [2]

It is located 164 km northeast of Bulawayo and 275 km south-west-south of Harare via Mvuma ( A17 Highway ) or 278 km via Kwekwe ( A5 Highway ).

The name Gweru is a further distortion of the name Gwelo which was a distortion of the name Ikwelo meaning a very steep place where one would usually use a ladder upwards or downwards. Itself a distortion of the original Kalanga name of Gwelu an abbreviation of Gwelumatjena meaning the river of white stones.

Gweru Urban is a constituency represented in the National Assembly of the Parliament of Zimbabwe, located in Gweru, Midlands Province. Its current MP since the 2023 election is Josiah Makombe of the Citizens Coalition for Change .
