Christina's World is a 1948 painting by American painter Andrew Wyeth and one of the best-known American paintings of the mid-20th century. It is a tempera work done in a realist style, depicting a woman in an incline position on the ground in a treeless, mostly tawny field, looking up at a gray house on the horizon, a barn, and various other small outbuildings are adjacent to the house. Olson House is a 14-room Colonial farmhouse in Cushing, Maine. The house was made famous by its depiction in Andrew Wyeth's Christina's World. The house and its occupants, Christina and Alvaro Olson, were depicted in numerous paintings and sketches by Wyeth from 1939 to 1968. The house was designated as a National Historic Landmark in June 2011.
Anna Christina Olson, paralyzed from the waist down, became the subject of one of Andrew Wyeth's best known works, titled Christina's World by Betsy. [2] [3] Their son, Jamie, later said "I always felt her signature should be alongside his." [2] Andrew Wyeth said of his wife that she "made me into a painter I would not have been otherwise". [2]
The Olson's were neighbors of Wyeth's, and Christina had a degenerative muscle condition (probably polio). She didn't want to use a wheelchair and preferred to crawl, as depicted in the painting.
In the graphic novel series Preacher, issue 43 (2011) is named after the painting Christina's World. The painting is also referenced throughout the series. Wyeth believed in the ability of ordinary things to carry symbolism, "profound meaning," and rich emotion. [5] The same is true for Wind from the Sea. Comparing the rigid window frame to Christina's resiliency, the decaying curtains to her disability, and the crocheted birds to her delicate and surviving femininity, Wyeth considered the painting to be a symbolic portrait of her.
