The Plankton Expedition was funded by the German government and private donors. In addition to Hensen, the expedition consisted of a team of five scientists and an artist: zoologist Frederick Dahl, physiologist and protistologist Karl Brandt, botanist Franz Schütt, geographer Otto Krümmel, and microbiologist Bernard Fischer, as well as artist Richard Eschke.
Phytoplankton (/ ˌ f aɪ t oʊ ˈ p l æ ŋ k t ə n /) are the autotrophic (self-feeding) components of the plankton community and a key part of ocean and freshwater ecosystems. The name comes from the Greek words φυτόν (phyton), meaning 'plant', and πλαγκτός (planktos), meaning 'wanderer' or 'drifter'.
Some of the largest plankton are krill and feed the largest of animals, baleen whales. My first foray into the scientific world was a job sexing Jassa falcata (a tiny amphipod) under a microscope.
The microbial pump is responsible for the production of old recalcitrant dissolved organic carbon (DOC) which is >100 years old. [16] Plankton in the ocean are incapable of breaking down this recalcitrant DOC and thus it remains in the oceans for 1000s years without being respired.
Zooplankton (/ ˈ z oʊ. ə p l æ ŋ k t ən /; [2] / ˌ z oʊ. ə ˈ p l æ ŋ k t ən /) [3] are heterotrophic (sometimes detritivorous) plankton.The word zooplankton is derived from Ancient Greek: ζῷον, romanized: zôion, lit.
The Earth is about 4.54 billion years old. [36] [37] [38] The earliest undisputed evidence of life on Earth dates from at least 3.5 billion years ago, [39] [40] during the Eoarchean era after a geological crust started to solidify following the earlier molten Hadean Eon. Microbial mat fossils have been found in 3.48 billion-year-old sandstone ...
Another classification divides plankton into eight types based on size: in this scheme, diatoms are classed as microalgae. Several systems for classifying the individual diatom species exist. Fossil evidence suggests that diatoms originated during or before the early Jurassic period, which was about 150 to 200 million years ago.
