The Bratislava City Museum (Múzeum mesta Bratislavy), established in 1868, is the oldest museum in continuous operation in Slovakia. [172] Its primary goal is to chronicle Bratislava's history in various forms from the earliest periods using historical and archaeological collections. It offers permanent displays in eight specialised museums.
The building was constructed in 1760–1765 with a trapezium contour and extremely narrow frontal face with a width of one room and staircase for a Bratislava (at that time Pressburg/Pozsony) merchant. After a reconstruction in 1975, Bratislava City Museum opened its exhibition of over 60 historical clocks here.
Today, there is a museum of the medieval fortifications of Bratislava (Pressburg, Pozsony), and arms located in the tower. Museum exhibits cover the town's fortification beginnings, reconstructions and their final destruction in the 18th century as the fortified walls were preventing the city's growth.
