In the 1850s and early 1860s, Nebraska City had been the eastern terminus of the Platte Valley freight line. [1] However, when the Union Pacific rail line built westward from Omaha, Nebraska City lost much of its business. [1] In an effort to regain its advantage, the businessmen of Nebraska City organized the Midland Pacific Railway Company. [1]
The Omaha Belt Line was a 15-mile (24 km) long railroad that circumnavigated the city starting in 1885. Carrying passengers and cargo, the rail was operated by the Missouri Pacific Railroad.
