Abel Brockway was born in 1818, and arrived in Saginaw in 1856. A shrewd businessman, he invested in a number of early ventures in Saginaw, including lumbering, railroads, banking, and other industries. In 1859, he purchased a plot of farmland (now bounded by Wells, Thurman, Gratiot, and Brockway Streets) from Benjamin Cushway.
Merrill Building (423 Court): Built in 1892, the Merrill building was a three-story Italianate building. Ippels Department Store moved into the building in 1905 and purchased the building in 1980. Bank of Saginaw Building (400 Court): Built in 1911, this Neo-Classical Revival-style bank was erected by the Bank of Saginaw, founded in 1888.
AHHS served the Saginaw school district for well over 100 years. In 2024, Arthur Hill students were moved to the newly built Saginaw United High School as part of the school district's consolidation plan.
