A tadpole or polliwog (also spelled pollywog) is the larval stage in the biological life cycle of an amphibian. Most tadpoles are fully aquatic, though some species of amphibians have tadpoles that are terrestrial. Tadpoles have some fish-like features that may not be found in adult amphibians such as a lateral line, gills and swimming tails.
The bird-voiced tree frog is a small species growing to about 5 cm (2.0 in) long. It is usually a dappled, pale grey or brown on its dorsal surface, but its color changes with the temperature and its level of activity, and may be more or less pale green. It often has a dark brown cross-shaped mark on its back and further dark areas on its limbs.
As a generalized system, Gosner stages may not be adequate for describing development of some anuran tadpoles. [3] For example, in the torrent-dwelling tadpoles of Ansonia longidigita and Meristogenys orphnocnemis , the usual Gosner stages become inappropriate beyond the stage 41 because the tadpoles retain their oral disc longer than the ...
The tadpoles of this species are mottled brown in color and grow to about 6 cm in length. They may complete metamorphosis (the process of changing from a larval stage to an adult) in about a month. During the breeding season, the striped rocket frog makes a distinctive "wick wick" call to attract mates.
In near permanent water, the tadpoles may have longer metamorphic duration (3–4 mo) to enable body growth and emergence of larger/stronger froglets. [5] Breeding season begins from August to May, and males will begin their mating call from 9:00 to 11:00 PM. Eggs are slightly green in color and can be found in clutches of 800 to 1200.
As tadpoles, the squirrel tree frog is preyed upon by dragonfly nymphs, giant water bugs, predatory fish and newts. [2] [3] Once the tadpoles metamorphose, the predators of the frogs change to small mammals, other frogs, snakes, birds. [2] To reduce the danger of being eaten as tadpoles, they use dense vegetation as cover. [4]
The isolation of populations has presumably occurred as a result of the erosion of these highlands and the seasonal inundation of the inter-patch areas. A study shows that Dendrobates tinctorius tadpoles can survive in pools having a high level of KH, vertical height of 15 mi (79,000 ft) and salinity up to 955 ppm. [8]
The juvenile may be a tadpole for 3 to 4 years before undergoing metamorphosis. [8] However, this rate heavily varies depending on the temperature and elevation of the area. [7] There are two classes of tadpoles: first year tadpoles and second year tadpoles. Metamorphosis tends to happen the second summer of tadpole life.
