Fancy pictures are a sub-genre of genre paintings in 18th-century English art, featuring scenes of everyday life but with an imaginative or storytelling element, usually sentimental. The usage of the term varied, and there was often an overlap with the conversation piece, a type of group portrait showing the subjects engaged in some activity.
She died in 1782 and the children are thought to have been added in 1784 or 1785. The painting was given to the Dulwich Picture Gallery in 1831 by Thomas Moody, one of the sons shown in the work, possibly to prevent it from passing to his step-mother, with whom he was not on friendly terms.
He took refuge in a family home at Rigny near Gray occupied by the postmaster Georges Anthony, his wife Louise (née Demandre) and their children. As a thank-you for their hospitality, Prud'hon painted this work and a portrait of Georges beside a horse (now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Dijon), both completed in 1796, the year he left their home.
