Hikes Point is a neighborhood in eastern Louisville, Kentucky, USA. Its boundaries are I-264 to the north, Breckenridge Lane to the west, and irregular boundaries to the other sides. The area was settled by American Revolutionary War veteran George Hikes in 1791 on land sold to him by William Meriwether.
The Clarksdale Housing Complex was a public housing project built in 1939. Clarksdale was occupied from 1939 to late 2004. It was the first public housing complex built in the city, and up until its demolition, completed in 2005, it was the largest public housing project in the state of Kentucky.
The 11-story 120 ft (37 m) high rise Commodore Apartment Building was opened in 1929 and designed by the architectural firm of Joseph & Joseph in 1928. [2] The architects designed four other buildings in the Louisville area including the Republic Building (1916) and the Elsby (1918) in New Albany, Indiana. [3]
Almost all of the land was developed by 1895. The vast majority of houses in the Original Highlands were constructed between 1860 and 1895, especially in the last 11 years of that period, during which 600 were built. The dwellings from before 1884 were mostly located along Breckinridge (formerly Howard), Christy, Baxter and Barret. [2]
