Soulard (/ ˈ s u l ɑːr d / SOO-lard) is a historic neighborhood in St. Louis, Missouri. It is the home of Soulard Farmers Market, the oldest farmers' market west of the Mississippi River. Soulard is one of ten certified local historic districts in the city of St. Louis. [2]
It is called "Dutch" from Deutsch, i.e., "German", as it was the southern center of German-American settlement in St. Louis in the early 19th century. [2] It was the original site of Concordia Seminary (before it relocated to Clayton, Missouri ), Concordia Publishing House , Lutheran Hospital, and other German community organizations.
In 1779, the market began at a flat meadow where farmers came to sell their goods. [1] [3] [4] It was the third public marketplace in St. Louis. [1]Antoine Soulard, who was born in 1766 in Rochefort, France, was an aristocrat and former French military officer who escaped France to avoid the consequences of the French Revolution.
Dutchtown is a census-designated place (CDP) and former village in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, United States, located at the intersection of Routes 25 and 74. The population was 163 at the 2020 census. It was part of the Cape Girardeau–Jackson, MO-IL Metropolitan Statistical Area.
It is home to the Columbia Farmers Market, and contains a pavilion with space for 98 vendors. [ 2 ] [ 3 ] The park opened in 2019 and by 2021 will include an interactive urban farm , demonstration gardens and orchards, a commercial kitchen, event space, a recreational trail, amphitheater, outdoor classroom, and playground.
The Bevo Mill area is direct to the west of the neighborhood of Dutchtown, which was a major center of German settlement in St. Louis in the mid-nineteenth century.After significant population loss in the later twentieth century, the neighborhood was revitalized in the 1990s by immigrants fleeing war in Bosnia and Croatia.
A post office called Patterson has been in operation since 1851. [4] The community has the name of George and William Patterson, pioneer citizens. [5]Fort Benton, a nearby historic Civil War fortification, and the Sam A. Baker State Park Historic District are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The largest group of livestock consisted of swine, totalling 4.5 million in 1900, followed by cattle, which in 1899 totalled nearly 3 million. Missouri farmers produced 7% of the national total of hogs in 1900, and only Illinois and Iowa had larger herds.
