Taps and dies are tools used to create screw threads, which is called threading. Many are cutting tools ; others are forming tools. A tap is used to cut or form the female portion of the mating pair (e.g. a nut ).
Schematic of a machine tap. Below is a comprehensive drill and tap size chart for all drills and taps, imperial and metric, up to 36.5 millimetres (1.44 in) in diameter.. In manufactured parts, holes with female screw threads are often needed; they accept male screws to facilitate the building and fastening of a finished assembly.
Metric uses D or DU limits which is the same system as imperial, but uses D or DU designators for over and undersized respectively, and goes by units of 0.013 mm (0.51 mils). [7] Generally taps come in the range of H1 to H5 and rarely L1.
The metric screw tap and clearance sizes are largely missing, and those clearance hole sizes that are present are more often incorrect; e.g. M5 x 0.8 has 5.1 mm as close fit, but this would be an interference fit, all sources have 5.3 mm. (0.1 mm is below the sum of surface roughness and tolerance of the screw and clearance drill diameter ...
A standard metric (concrete) block is 190 mm wide, 390 mm long, and 190 mm high, which allows for 10 mm mortar joints in between bricks, giving a standard unit size of 200 mm square by 400 mm long. [3] A standard metric brick is 90 by 57 by 190 mm; with 10 mm of mortar, that produces a standard unit of 100 mm x 200 mm. [3]
Taps and dies are cutting tools etc. Some of them are, form taps create threads by deformation. Form taps are discussed in the article "Threading". Perhaps that information should be moved here or the article title changed. The article does not cover collapsing taps, machine taps with inserts or taps which have non helical paths (Emuge punch tap).
