The league is owned and managed by Scottish Women's Football (SWF), an affiliated body of the Scottish Football Association (SFA). Following on from the national league of the Scottish Women's Football Association founded in 1972, the SWFL was formed by clubs and the SWFA in 1999 as the country's top four women's league tiers.
