Spartan Microlights is an American aircraft manufacturer based in Astoria, New York. The company specializes in the design and manufacture of powered parachutes , ultralight trikes and powered paragliders in the form of ready-to-fly aircraft in the US FAR 103 Ultralight Vehicles rules and kits for the US Experimental - Amateur-built category.
BB Microlight works closely with their US distributor, Manta Aircraft, to develop products. In the US their carriages are usually fitted with Manta RST wings in place of the BB supplied wings used in European sales. BB Microlight builds the BB-01 Bence, BB-02 Serpa and the BB-03 Trya trike wings. [1]
The aircraft was designed to comply with the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale microlight category and the US light-sport aircraft rules. [2] [3] It features a strut-braced hang glider-style high-wing, weight-shift controls, a two-seats-in-tandem open cockpit, retractable wheeled tricycle landing gear and dual floats and a single engine in pusher configuration.
A number of different wings can be fitted to the basic carriage, including the BB Microlight BB-03 Trya and the US-made 40% double surface Manta RST. The Manta RST comes in four sizes, graded by wing area: 12.5 m 2 (135 sq ft), 15.5 m 2 (167 sq ft), 17 m 2 (180 sq ft) and 19 m 2 (200 sq ft).
The standard wing supplied was a J & J single-surface wing, but other wings of suitable gross weight can be used. The specified powerplant is the 40 hp (30 kW) Rotax 447 twin-cylinder, two-stroke, single-ignition aircraft engine. [1] [3] Assembly time from the kit is about 30 hours.
