Parisian Inc. (/ p ə ˈ r iː ʒ ə n /, pə-REE-zhən [1] [2]) was an American chain of upmarket department stores founded and headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama.Competing mainly through the 1980s against Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, and Gus Mayer, Parisian underwent a series of restructurings and mergers during its 130-year history, and was taken over by Proffitt’s, Inc. in 1996.
Saks, Inc. was an American holding company founded in 1998 through the merger of Proffitts, Inc. and Saks Fifth Avenue. Before acquisition by the Canadian-founded Hudson's Bay Company in 2013, it held ownership of numerous regional department store chains including Carson's, McRae's, Parisian, and Proffitt's as well as the New York City-based Saks Fifth Avenue.
Also in 2013 the Beijing-based Wangfujing Department Store which was a rival of Printemps in China acquired Printemps China (PCD Stores). [43] [44] On 15 January 2014, Printemps opened its first new store in 32 years at the Carrousel du Louvre shopping mall in Paris. [45] The store closed in 2023.
In 1995, the Parisian store was renovated. [12] The department store in Paris moved in 1999 a few hundred meters away. Points of sale in Bordeaux and Lille opened their doors in 1996, followed by Nantes, Toulouse and other French cities.
In 1922, when the decorative arts were at their high point in France, the Pomone design and decorating department was established, following the trend of other Parisian department stores. From 1923 to 1928, Paul Follot (1877–1941) was its director, followed by René-Lucien Prou (1889–1948) and Albert-Lucien Guénot (1894–1993) up to 1955.
