Ellensburg is a stop on the PRCA professional rodeo circuit, occurring each year on Labor Day weekend. The Ellensburg Rodeo has been a town tradition since 1923, and is the largest rodeo in Washington state. [10] The rodeo arena is encompassed by the Kittitas County Fair, also held during Labor Day weekend.
The National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA), based in Walla Walla, Washington, was established in 1949. It sanctions more than 100 college rodeos every year in the United States, and represents over 3,500 student athletes attending more than 135 member colleges and universities.
The finale was held for several years at the Washington State Fair in Puyallup, Washington. In 2020, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the finale was held in Rapid City, South Dakota. [17] In 2021, it moved to the California Rodeo Salinas in Salinas, California. [18] The finale returned to Puyallup in 2022. [19]

It began in 1947 as a single organization in Texas (National Championship High School Rodeo Association), and has grown to include local organizations in most U.S. states and in Canada, Mexico, Australia, and New Zealand. It has over 12,000 members and sanctions over 1,800 rodeos every year.
