An act of parliament, as a form of primary legislation, is a text of law passed by the legislative body of a jurisdiction (often a parliament or council). [1] In most countries with a parliamentary system of government, acts of parliament begin as a bill , which the legislature votes on.
At the end of a medieval Parliament of England, a collection of acts of a public character was made in the form of a Statute Roll and given the title of the King's regnal year. Each particular act formed a section, or a chapter, of the complete statute, so that, e.g. the Vagabonds Act 1383 became 7 Ric. 2 .
