Spirit Lake is a city in Dickinson County, Iowa, United States. The population was 5,439 at the 2020 census. It is the county seat of Dickinson County. [4] The town is located along the western shore of East Okoboji Lake, in the Iowa Great Lakes region.
According to the United States Census Bureau, Spirit Lake Township covers an area of 28.9 square miles (74.86 square kilometers); of this, 19.01 square miles (49.23 square kilometers, 65.76 percent) is land and 9.9 square miles (25.63 square kilometers, 34.24 percent) is water.
The present Spirit Lake Casino and Resort is owned and operated by the tribe and is located in St. Michael, North Dakota. The casino has brought new sources of income and helped to stabilize the tribal economy employing over 300 people with 75% being Native American.
The water level of Spirit Lake is maintained at about 3,406 ft (1,040 m) by draining water through Spirit Lake Outlet Tunnel, a gravity-feed tunnel completed in 1985. The 8,465-foot-long (2,580 m) tunnel was cut through Harrys Ridge to South Coldwater Creek, which flows to Coldwater Lake and into the North Fork of the Toutle River.
