The Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp is an American twin-row, 18-cylinder, air-cooled radial aircraft engine with a displacement of 2,800 cu in (46 L), and is part of the long-lived Wasp family of engines. The R-2800 saw widespread use in many important American aircraft during and after World War II.
I expect when the R-2800 in the photo was restored for display the staff grabbed the nearest harness and fitted it, not realising that it might cause problems years later!! Have to be careful with museum placards, some are very obviously wrong and I don't think they should be used as a ' reliable source ' for our purposes.
The Curtiss C-46 had always been considered a problematic aircraft due to its poor performance, particularly in single-engine flight (with several airlines replacing the original Pratt & Whitney R-2800-75 engines of 2000 hp with Pratt & Whitney R-2800-83 AM4 engines of 2100 hp), its high fuel consumption, and frequent fuel tank leaks.
Raytheon Technologies Corp said on Wednesday some Pratt & Whitney large commercial engine deliveries may slip into the first quarter as the aerospace company struggles with parts and labor shortages.
With Pratt & Whitney starting development of their own 2,800 in 3 (46 L) displacement 18-cylinder, twin-row radial as the R-2800 Double Wasp in 1937, Wright's first R-3350 prototype engines with a 3,350 in 3 (54.9 L) displacement were run in May of the same year. Development was slow, due to the complexity, and the R-2600 receiving development ...
The Pratt & Whitney Wasp was the civilian name of a family of air-cooled radial piston engines developed in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. [1] The Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Company (P&W) was founded in 1925 by Frederick B. Rentschler, who had previously been the President of Wright Aeronautical. He brought with him some of Wright's best designers ...

In 1925 the American Pratt & Whitney company was founded, competing with Wright's radial engines. Pratt & Whitney's initial offering, the R-1340 Wasp, was test run later that year, beginning a line of engines over the next 25 years that included the 14-cylinder, twin-row Pratt & Whitney R-1830 Twin Wasp. More Twin Wasps were produced than any ...
