Muskegon is the center of the Muskegon metropolitan statistical area, which is coextensive with Muskegon County and had a population of 175,824 as of the 2020 census. [3] It is also part of the larger Grand Rapids - Kentwood -Muskegon- combined statistical area .

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 36.4 square miles (94 km 2), of which 36.2 square miles (94 km 2) are land and 0.2 square miles (0.5 km 2), or 0.57%, are water. The facility has six housing units used for Michigan Department of Corrections male prisoners 18 years of age and older. One housing unit holds up to 120 Level I prisoners.
