Sharp sand, also known as grit sand or river sand and as builders' sand, concrete sand, or ASTM C33 when medium or coarse grain, is a gritty sand used in concrete and potting soil mixes or to loosen clay soil [1] as well as for building projects. It is not cleaned or smoothed to the extent recreational play sand is. It is useful for drainage. [2]
It is called grus in geology or sharp sand in the building trade where it is preferred for concrete, and in gardening where it is used as a soil amendment to loosen clay soils. Sand that is transported long distances by water or wind will be rounded, with characteristic abrasion patterns on the grain surface. Desert sand is typically rounded.
A typical modern lime mortar mix would be 1 part lime putty to 3 parts washed, well graded, sharp sand. Other materials have been used as aggregate instead of sand. The theory is that the voids of empty space between the sand particles account for 1/3 of the volume of the sand.
In Europe, sizing ranges are specified as d/D, where the d shows the smallest and D shows the largest square mesh grating that the particles can pass. Application-specific preferred sizings are covered in European Standard EN 13043 for road construction, EN 13383 for larger armour stone, EN 12620 for concrete aggregate, EN 13242 for base layers of road construction, and EN 13450 for railway ...
Iron plates, being heavy, are generally installed using a crane while plywood and plastic reinforcements are placed by hand. Ground reinforcement grids are installed by preparing a suitable depth of sub base material, overlaid with a screed layer of fine gravel or sharp sand to create a level followed by geotextile membrane before final assembly and in-filling of the final grid surface.
