Walter de Merton, (c. 1205 – 27 October 1277), founder of Merton Henry Savile, Warden from 1585 to 1621, had great influence on the development of the college. Merton College was founded in 1264 by Walter de Merton, Lord Chancellor and Bishop of Rochester. [14]
Merton College has existed since around 1890. A new building was erected in 1971 with additional blocks in later years. Gunn was an undergraduate and doctoral student at Merton College, Oxford, matriculating in 1979. [2] Prior to this he attended the Whitgift School in South Croydon. [3] Gunn's doctoral thesis, a study of the life and career of Charles Brandon, 1st Duke of Suffolk, was supervised by C. S. L. Davies and completed in 1986. [4]
