McKeesport is located about 15 miles up the Monongahela River from Pittsburgh. The grant for this library was commissioned April 2, 1899. Out of approximately 1,688 libraries funded by Carnegie in America, McKeesport's was the 12th be commissioned. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. [1]
McKeesport, then part of Versailles Township, began to grow in 1830 when mining of the large deposits of bituminous coal in the region began. The first schoolhouse was built in 1832, with James E. Huey as its schoolmaster. [citation needed] McKeesport was incorporated as a borough in 1842, and the city's first steel mill was established in 1851.
The building is located directly across from McKeesport Hall on a hill overlooking the center of campus.
