The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as the Shanghai Ranking, is one of the annual publications of world university rankings. The league table was originally compiled and issued by Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2003, making it the first global university ranking with multifarious indicators. [1] [2]

The 2019 table included more than 1200 universities; in 2020, the number has risen to 1500 universities from 97 countries and territories. [6] In 2021, there were 1,650 higher education institutions represented in the ranking. [7] In 2022 the list has been expanded up to 1,800 universities and in 2023 - up to 2000.
The title then returned to Africa after 2023 Africa Cup of Nations champions Ivory Coast took it from Uruguay. On 15 October 2024, Sierra Leone , ranked ranked 125th in the world at the time, defeated Ivory Coast, becoming the lowest ranked team to be Unofficial World Champions.
