The Max Petersen House, also known as the Petersen Mansion, is a historic building located on the west side of Davenport, Iowa, United States. It has been individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1979. In 2004 it was included as a contributing property in the Marycrest College Historic District.
The house was added to Iowa's most endangered properties list in 2013. [10] In May 2014 the city of Davenport began the process of condemning the house. It was the first time the city has attempted to save an abandoned house through condemnation. [11] In September 2014 the city purchased the house through condemnation for $34,000. [8]
The building was built in 1907 for the Davenport Bag & Paper Company. The five-story building is composed of reinforced concrete blocks, and it is considered the first "fireproof" building built in the city after a 1901 fire that caused more than $1.25 million in damages and destroyed eight city blocks.
