A Tale of Two Cities is a historical novel published in 1859 by English author Charles Dickens, set in London and Paris before and during the French Revolution. The novel tells the story of the French Doctor Manette, his 18-year-long imprisonment in the Bastille in Paris, and his release to live in London with his daughter Lucie whom he had never met.
The book is told from the standpoint of a poor household pet, a dog self-described by the first sentence of the story: "My father was a St. Bernard, my mother was a collie, but I am a Presbyterian." The story begins with a description of the dog's life as a puppy and her separation from her mother, which to her was inexplicable.
The Eyes and the Impossible was received positively by critics, including starred reviews by Kirkus Reviews and Publishers Weekly. [2] [3] Writing for The Booklist, Emily Graham called the book "delightful" and praised the way the narration of the story was done through the dog's eyes, noting similarities to one of Eggers' short stories, "After I Was Thrown in the River and Before I Drowned". Story XIV: This story is a retelling of the children's story, "Br'er Rabbit." In Zora Neale Hurston 's version, Mr. Dog and Mr. Rabbit are best friends but are both in love with Miss Nancy Coons. Nancy admires them both, but is drawn to Mr. Dog more because of his melodious singing voice.
[2] In contrast, David Robson in The Daily Telegraph wrote "There is such an elegant symmetry to the narrative that it is disappointing to report that the novel as a whole never catches fire. The flashbacks to 1975 should contextualise what is happening today, but Atkinson, like many a novelist before her, gets bogged down in tedious explanation.
