The company was founded by William Neilson (1844–1915) in 1893 as one of many independent dairy producers in Canada. [1] Neilsons began as a milk retailer, and then switched to cream and ice cream products. [1] Neilson Dairy became William Neilson Limited in 1907. [1]
Harold Oswin was a candy roller in Neilson's hard candy room and joined the company when he was fourteen years old. [2] He was promoted to candy maker in the late 1920s. When a chocolate bar contest was announced, he submitted his concept; peanut butter coated in a mixture of sugar, molasses and vanilla, dipped in chocolate.
Neilson was born in Ramsay Township, Lanark County, Canada West. His working life began as a farmer in Rochester, New York, then moved on to being a machinist's apprentice in Almonte, Ontario, Canada. [1] In 1873 journeyman Neilson worked in Brockville, Ontario, moving on in 1889 to a retail store.
