Normative school transitions refer to the transitions of students from elementary school to middle school and from middle school to high school. As each transition occurs, the student generally undergoes many different changes. These changes can be anything from an increase in the size of the school, to the change in friends that one meets.
After-school activities, also known as after-school programs or after-school care, started in the early 1900s mainly just as supervision of students after the final school bell. [1] Today, after-school programs do much more. There is a focus on helping students with school work but can be beneficial to students in other ways.
An at-risk student is a term used in the United States to describe a student who requires temporary or ongoing intervention in order to succeed academically. [1] At risk students, sometimes referred to as at-risk youth or at-promise youth, [2] are also adolescents who are less likely to transition successfully into adulthood and achieve economic self-sufficiency. [3]
Engaged time is also called time on task. During engaged time, students are participating actively in learning activities—asking and responding to questions, completing worksheets and exercises, preparing skits and presentations, etc. This is an important part of the school day because when students are engaged (actively) they are learning.
Upon arrival in middle school or junior high school, students begin to enroll in class schedules in which they will take classes with several teachers in different classrooms on any given day. (This is a sharp transition from the primary or elementary school model in which students remain with a single teacher in a single classroom.)
